What is the Digital Clinical Experience Score?
The Digital Clinical Experience (DCE) score is the percentage that your student will receive on most assignments in Shadow Health. It is our recommended score to be used for grading purposes, as it is a fair assessment of a student’s effort. In cases where Shadow Health is being used for clinical replacement, it can be used to measure if students have met a threshold score, in order to get credit for completing their assignment as a pass/fail exercise.
Where do I see the DCE Score?
- Faculty: Faculty can see all the DCE scores for their entire class at a glance, in the Student Results Book. It is the very first score you will see for your student. When grading, we recommend that you simply transfer this score directly into your grade book.

What is the Student Performance Index?
Shadow Health’s Student Performance Index (SPI) score is our valid, reliable instrument to evaluate your students’ clinical judgment and critical thinking skills on assignments that have a patient exam component. The SPI score compares the student’s performance against the level expected of a high-performing graduate at the conclusion of their course of study that has conducted a model exam.
We provide this score to students as part of their feedback on each applicable assignment. It’s also provided as a percentage score in the Student Results Book, so faculty can preview the score at a glance. The SPI score provides both faculty and students with the immediate and detailed feedback necessary to accurately identify both areas of strength and opportunities to remediate.
How does the DCE score relate to the Student Performance Index?
In cases where the SPI is used, the DCE score reflects how the student’s work compares to their peer learners across the country for a particular assignment. It normalizes the SPI score from the national average for that particular assignment, as well as a standard deviation, to a mean of 80% - a percentage faculty informed Shadow Health would represent how they would expect an average student to perform.
Where do I see the SPI Score?
- Faculty: Faculty can see the SPI scores for their entire class at a glance, in the Student Results Book. It is the score you will see in the second column, immediately following the DCE score. We provide this to you at-a-glance, so you can see the “raw” score your students received on the assignment. Because this score has not yet been normalized against a national average, Shadow Health does not recommend that this score be used for student grading purposes.
If you do wish to look at any student’s results in more detail, you can click on the “Completed” link next to any student’s name to see their full feedback, which includes the SPI point totals.

How is the SPI score calculated?
The SPI score consists of a total number of points from how a student performs in the following areas:
- On all patient case assignments with an SPI score, the score consists of: Subjective Data Collection, Objective Data Collection
- Where applicable, it also includes: Education and Empathy, Care Plans, Information Processing, Patient Teaching, Prescription Writing, Medication Selection.
What do the Proficiency Levels on the SPI score mean?
In addition to providing a point total derived from the data points listed above, the SPI score contextualizes student performance by comparing the student’s current ability to those of their peers nationwide via the Proficiency Level scale.
The ranges for these Proficiency Levels are determined from scores obtained from representative student populations. The Beginning range is the bottom 50% of scores, the Developing range is the next 25% of scores, and the Proficient range is in the top 25% of scores.
